Cheryl Flanagan
Founder/President Cheryl fell in love with horses watching Westerns on TV in the 50's. She saw how these wonderful animals changed the lives of humans and civilizations for centuries.
Cheryl believes horses need to be honored and cared for, as all animals on Earth, because we are their stewards. They should be kept free of pain, suffering, abuse and neglect. Being a 4H Leader for 5 years and United States Pony Club JT/DC to Suncoast and Cohutta Highlanders on and off for 20 years, she saw the good and bad side of horse ownership and responsibility. Living near Tampa Bay Downs, she learned of the horse slaughter disposal system for Thoroughbred horses once there was a loss of profit from the horses. She became acquainted with some of the trainers and they still send her retired racers. She took in her first rescue horse in 1979 and has continued to help horses not fall into the slaughter pipeline. Horse Rescue, Relief and Retirement Fund was incorporated in 1998 and has saved countless horses. The main rescue farm has thousands of donated hours by volunteers and horses are changing lives everyday. Cheryl started a Barn Buddy Program for Foster children in 2011 and a Pink Horse Shoe Fund for horses with cancer in 2012. This rescue changes the world for horses and humans alike. |
Tom Scott
Vice President Tom Scott has been a dedicated volunteer with Save the Horses for over 10 years. Tom has been in the insurance industry for 36 years and has worked at Travelers insurance for 25 of those. Raised in Houston, TX, Tom now calls Suwanee, GA home. After one year of volunteering, Tom became a Lead volunteer and holds the position of Vice-President of the Save the horses Board of Directors. When Tom isn’t working, you might find him cheering on his favorite team, the Carolina Panthers, or spending time with his adopted OTTB, Alivie.
